About National Women Build Week
Habitat for Humanity’s 10th annual National Women Build Week, from May 6-14, invites women to devote at least one day to help build decent and affordable housing in their local communities.
National Women Build Week is a nationwide initiative of Habitat’s Women Build program developed in partnership with Lowe’s. Lowe’s donated $2 million to support this year’s National Women Build Week and will provide $5,000 to 300 participating Habitat organizations. More than 17,000 women, including Lowe’s Heroes volunteers from across the country, are expected to volunteer at construction sites as part of Habitat’s 2017 National Women Build Week.
About Women Build
Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program recruits, educates and inspires women to build, and advocate for decent and affordable houses in their communities. Women have the capability and determination necessary to build Habitat for Humanity houses, addressing the problem of substandard housing in a concrete way so that families have safe, decent and affordable homes. On the build site, women have proven themselves every bit as capable as men or mixed-gender crews. Men often are involved in Women Build training programs and build projects in supportive roles and as subcontractors when women from the necessary trades are not available.
Women volunteers boost Habitat’s capacity to build more houses and serve more families. More than 2,300 Women Build houses have been built by all-women construction crews since the program began in 1998. The program continues to grow across international borders, empowering women everywhere to address poverty housing for themselves, their families and their neighbors. Dozens of international Women Builds have taken place, and the program aims to direct financial assistance to women-led projects worldwide.
There are many ways to get involved including volunteering on the build site, providing lunch to the construction crew, and financial support to provide the needed materials.
